If you would like help with career decisions, a copy of the Princeton Review Guide to Your Career, (4th ed.) is available in the main office. This book contains self tests and guides to help you identify careers that are more likely to suit your personality and interests. It also contains profiles for "today's hottest careers." Students may borrow it for a week at a time. The book entitled What Color is your Parachute? is also a classic job hunting/finding book that that can help you identify what job(s) you would enjoy. This book also has useful information about how to get the job that you want. Both of these books are workbooks that can be purchased at most bookstores.

Predoctoral Fellowships in Biological Sciences. "Fellowships are intended for students who have completed less than one year of graduate study toward an M.S., a Ph.D., or an Sc.D. degree in the biological sciences. Students who hold or are pursuing medical or dental degrees (M.D., D.O., D.V.M., or D.D.S.) may also be eligible to apply for fellowship support for study toward a Ph.D. or Sc.D." Fellowship includes an annual stipend of $18,000 along with an allowance to help defray education costs of $16,000. Students should apply via the Web, go to national-academies.org/osep/fo.

·       Major in a biological or chemical science

·       Have completed the equivalent of a junior year

·       Have attained a minimum of 3.3 out of 4.0 GPA, or the equivalent

·       Be 18 years of age or older

·       Be authorized to work in the United States

Summer Internship Program Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute SYNOPSIS: The sponsor provides support to give both undergraduate and graduate students experience in a research environment. OBJECTIVES:: Areas of study may include, but are not limited to: aquaculture, biomedical marine research, marine biology, marine mammal research, marine natural product chemistry, marine microbiology, ocean engineering, ocean technology, and oceanography.

ELIGIBILITY: Graduate interns must be currently enrolled graduate students or graduating seniors who have been accepted and are pre-registered for a graduate program. Undergraduate interns are students currently enrolled in a full-time program who have completed at least the equivalent of two years of college and are currently seeking a four-year degree. Students must be in good academic standing and be at least eighteen years of age. Students who are not U.S. citizens must have a current visa with authorization to work or be on an educational visa.

FUNDING:Graduate students receive approximately $3,500 and undergraduate students receive approximately $3,000 for the ten-week program. Interns are responsible for their own housing and transportation. Furnished student housing with cooking and laundry facilities is available on-campus, on a first-come, first-served basis. Head of Interns at the River Project

(This job is part time during the school year and full time in summers.)

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Head of Interns is responsible for supervising the Marine Biology Internship Program for high school and college students. Students work with prestigious mentors on research projects and field studies conducted at Pier 26. The Head coordinates the individual research projects and acts as a liaison among the scientist mentors, the River Project staff, the students, and the participating schools and universities. He/she helps design the projects, manage the collection of data, oversee data analysis, and guide report writing. In addition to these academic tasks, the Head also maintains and operates small motorboats and rowboats, hosts field trips and tours of the aquarium exhibit and lab, represents the River Project on committees and at conferences, and helps maintain captive fishes and invertebrates. Areas of research coordinated by the Head focus mostly on near shore living resources and water quality.

REQUIREMENTS:

Advanced degree in biological science or oceanography, in progress or completed. Knowledge of local fish and invertebrates; microscopy and lab skills; in-water skills such as snorkeling and diving; and experience operating rowboats and small motorboats. Excellent writing skills. Must be pleasant and willing to work on collaborative projects.

STARTING DATE: Immediately

HOURS: During the school year: 30 hours a week: availability at weekends and after school essential.

Summer: 40 hrs/wk

SALARY: $15 per hour, no benefits

Office of Student Employment. Services are provided on a walk-in basis during office hours 9AM-5PM, Monday thru Friday.  Individual appointments were needed, can be scheduled by calling 516-463-6782. Bulletin Boards listing available positions are adjacent to the office located on the balcony of the Student Center.  Bulletin Boards can be viewed at any time, as the building is open 24 hours per day. Also available is a telephone job line 516-463-4JOB, announcing current jobs on campus including those appropriate for graduate students. For all positions listed below, applicants must hold a baccalaureate degree and be accepted as a fully matriculated student in graduate Master or Doctoral level program at Hofstra University.

Graduate Assistantships are available in departments throughout the University.  Assistantships usually require a commitment of 25 hours per week, on an academic year contract. Compensation takes the form of tuition remission (6 to 9 credits per semester) and a cash stipend varying from department to department.  Assistantship opportunities are as varied as the different offices and departments that service the University community.  Working in Academic Advisement or the Recreation Center may be of interest to you.  Perhaps the Office of Student Activities or the Dean of Students Office might be more to your liking.  Most positions are available in student services or administrative offices.  For positions in academic offices not opportunities listed below.
Graduate Assistants. On-campus part-time positions that pay only the hourly rate are also available throughout the campus.  Graduate Assistants usually work in the academic departments throughout the campus, often in their major, performing various support skills for professors and in the department offices.
Federal Work-Study Program On-Campus and Off-Campus Jobs. Students eligible for financial aid may qualify for Federal Work-Study funds.  Graduate Assistant positions on-campus, as listed above, may be salaried through the program.  Off-campus positions may also be available in not-for-profit and municipal agencies in the community. Federal Work-Study jobs are assigned only through the Office of Student Employment and pay an hourly wage.  Contact the Office of Student Employment for further details.
Residential Life.
Employment opportunities requiring prior Residential Life experience include Resident Director and Assistant Complex Director.  Compensation includes tuition remission and stipend, and requires residence in a university provided facility.  Inquiries and application should be made directly to the Office of Residential Life (516-0463-4955).
Tutors. The University Tutorial Program hires tutors on an as-needed, hourly wage basis.  There is an ongoing need for those applicants skilled in science, math, computer science and foreign language.  Once enrolled at the university, graduate students may apply directly to the University Tutorial Program (516-463-4955).
