In this section, web sites are organized by category. The sites listed are generally reputable sources of information, but evaluation of the information presented is the responsibility of the reader. You may refer to the "Web Evaluation" page to help you determine the quality of information available at specific sites. Except for site placement into specific categories, no ranking of sites is expressed or implied.

Some sites have overlapping content and may be listed in more than one of the categories below.

The site categories are as follows:

Journals: Includes journals and search tools; some sites may only be accessible from Hofstra computers, or may contain only limited information for non-subscribers
Cell Bio: Includes general cell and molecular biology information, DNA and protein databases etc.
Mol Evol: Includes general molecular evolution sites for tree-building, mitochondrial DNA, and developmental biology as is it relates to molecular evolution (evo-devo).
Bats: popular sites for additional information about bat biology and conservation.
Medical: places to go for medical information on cancer, aids, sports medicine, etc.
Biology: sites containing biology-related information that does not fit well into any of the other categories or is only peripherally relevant to courses that I teach.
Education: includes career information, information about course evaluation, impact of IT on the classroom, information about graduate and professional schools.

Allen et al. (Nature, 1999, 402:722) tested reliability of science-related web sites. They evaluated sites found with the search terms "evolution" (EV), "genetically modified organisms"(GMO), and "endangered species"(ES).  Their results are shown in the following table. The data suggest that you should be wary of much of the information available on the web.
