World's 10 Largest Domestic Airlines, 2008

Domestic air traffic is dominated by the United States with 8 of the 10 largest domestic air carriers in the world. The combination of factors such as a continental-sized country (large distances), high standards of living, a dominantly urban population, and a service economy, generates a huge demand to be serviced by air carriers. China has also become a significant domestic market. Low cost carriers, such as Southwest Airlines and JetBlue, have become important domestic airlines targeting the "no frills" customer base with a network configuration that relies much on point-to-point services.
