In 2001, the global a container fleet was just above 15 million TEU. In just six years it grew by 10 million TEU to reach 28 million TEU in 2008. An important trend has been the growing share of maritime shipping companies, from 55% in 2001 to 60% in 2008. The main reason behind this trend is the growing role of maritime shipping companies in global transport chains.
