THE GEOGRAPHY OF TRANSPORT SYSTEMS

The growth of containers handled by ports has been remarkable. The composition of this growth reveals an enduring share of the function of transshipment as well as the movement of empty containers. While transshipment and empty containers accounted for 21% and 16% respectively of the total containers handled by ports in 1995, this share remained relatively unchanged (21% and 14% respectively) in 2005. However, the volume of transshipment and empties has more than doubled during the same time period.
