Passenger-Miles Transported within the United States, 1960-2008 (millions)

The private car is the dominant mode answering the passenger transport demand in the United States, with 2,500 million passenger-miles, about 80% of the total. The major trend behind the growth of passengers transport demand has been the motorization and spatial expansion of American cities, coupled with a robust demographic growth.
